Happy Monday, Friend! I have a little assignment for you this week. I want you to invite someone over for dinner. (I know, revolutionary, right?!) And before you start mentally rearranging your entire schedule, planning a five-course menu, and wondering when you'll have time to clean the baseboards... STOP RIGHT THERE, MISS MA'AM. I'm not talking about THAT kind of dinner party. I'm talking about the kind where you make a big pot of something delicious, light a few candles, and tell your favorite people to come hungry. Because somewhere along the way, I think we've made having people over entirely too complicated. We've convinced ourselves that we need a special occasion, a spotless house, an impressive menu, and a table that looks like it belongs in a magazine. And by the time we've checked all those boxes, we're too exhausted to enjoy the people we've invited. What if we just... didn't do all that? šÆļø The case for an ordinary dinner partyHere's something I believe with my whole heart: Dinner parties can change the world. Not because of what's on the menu. Not because of the flowers on the table. And certainly not because you spent a small fortune making everything look perfect. It's because of what happens when people sit down together. The conversations that start while someone is passing the bread. The stories that come out after everybody's had a second helping. The laughter that keeps going long after the dishes should have been cleared. It's the simple act of making room for someone in your life. And I think we could all use a little more of that. But here's the thing: if we're always waiting until we have the time, money, energy, or perfectly decorated house to entertain, we're going to miss an awful lot of opportunities to connect. So let's make hosting a little more ordinary. And a whole lot more magical. š² Start with the dinner you're already making. You don't need to develop an entirely new menu just because someone is coming over. Making chili? Invite a friend and put out some extra toppings. Roasting a chicken? Add a few potatoes and tell your neighbor to bring a bottle of wine. Have a casserole recipe that feeds eight people, but there are only two of you at home? Well, there's your dinner party! One of my favorite hosting tricks is to build the gathering around something I already know how to make. There's no experimenting with an unfamiliar recipe while your guests are arriving. No complicated cooking schedule. No wondering whether dinner is actually going to be edible. Make something delicious that you're comfortable cooking, and let the rest of the evening unfold. To this day, this might be one of my most favorite dinner parties I've ever hosted... And it was a last-minute ask, with about 2 hours before people arrived. š½ļø Set a table that makes people want to stay. Now, y'all KNOW I love a beautiful table. But beautiful doesn't have to mean elaborate. Pull out the tablecloth you already own. Put a bowl of apples in the middle of the table if you're feeling particularly festive. And here's my favorite little hosting trick: turn off those overhead lights! A few lamps and some candlelight can make even the simplest dinner feel like a special occasion. We're going for a cozy little neighborhood restaurant, not a royal wedding reception. ā¤ļø Give yourself permission to enjoy your own party. Can we talk about this one for a minute? I think one of the biggest mistakes we make as hosts is creating so much work for ourselves that we never actually get to enjoy the gathering. We're constantly running back and forth to the kitchen, checking the oven, washing dishes, and worrying about whether everybody has everything they need. Meanwhile, our guests are having the best time, and we're missing it all! That's why I love choosing menus you can prepare ahead of time. A pot of chili that's already simmering. A casserole that just needs to go into the oven. A salad that can be tossed right before dinner. When your guests arrive, I want you to be able to pour yourself a drink, sit down, and JOIN THEM. Crazy, right?! You are not the hired help at your own dinner party, friend. You are part of the magic. ⨠Your dinner party doesn't need a reason. Here's what I'd really love for you to take away from this email. You don't have to wait for a birthday, a holiday, or a special occasion to gather your people. Tuesday is a perfectly good reason. So is the fact that you haven't seen your best friend in three weeks. Or that your neighbor just moved in. Or that you've had a particularly long season and could use some good company. The invitation doesn't need to be fancy. "Hey! I'm making a big pot of chili Thursday night. Want to come over?" That's the whole invitation. And who knows what might happen once everybody gets around the table? Your little hosting assignment this weekI want you to send ONE invitation. Not plan an elaborate dinner party. Not buy a bunch of new serving pieces. Not create a Pinterest board with 47 different centerpiece ideas. Just invite someone. Pick a date, decide what you're making, and send the text. Because the magic doesn't start when the candles are lit, or dinner comes out of the oven. It starts when you decide to make room for someone at your table. Be the invite, Sweetpea. Love, Sweetpea Lifestyle P.S. If you send that invitation this week, hit reply and tell me what you're making! I absolutely LOVE hearing about the gatherings happening around your tables. š A Little Prepsgiving NoteWant to get ahead of the holidays while we're making more room for the good stuff? š©āš³ Easy Recipes that Gather People š„° Making Life Simple and Tasty š Ringing in the NEW Southern Belle
Hey, Sweet Friend! I have a theory. A cozy home isn't necessarily one that's decorated beautifully, perfectly organized, or even particularly clean. It's one that feels GOOD to come home to. š The kitchen is ready for you to make dinner. š There's a place to sit down and enjoy it. š You know what's in your refrigerator. š And when someone texts to ask if they can stop by, you don't immediately start calculating where you're going to toss all your clutter by the time they ring the doorbell......
Can I tell you something I've been thinking about lately? We spend an awful lot of time preparing for special occasions and not nearly enough time enjoying the perfectly ordinary days that make up most of our lives. We save the good candles for company. The pretty dishes for holidays. The recipes we really want to make for a dinner party that isn't even on the calendar yet. And in the meantime, all these perfectly lovely Tuesday evenings are waiting for us to enjoy. I think that's where the...
