Hey, Sweet Friends! Can I confess something?? Some of my favorite dinner party menus are the ones that look wildly impressive but require very little actual cooking. You know the kind. Your guests walk in and immediately say, "Wow, this is beautiful." Meanwhile, you're standing there thinking, "I mostly assembled things." That's exactly the kind of menu we're talking about today. Because one of my favorite hosting philosophies is: Make one. Assemble the rest. Not every gathering requires a complicated menu. Not every dinner party needs three hours of cooking. Sometimes the most memorable evenings happen because you weren't stuck in the kitchen all night. You were sitting at the table. Listening. Laughing. Asking one more question. This month's Sweetpea's Supper Club menu is built around exactly that idea. The Curious Hearts Summer Supper MenuShrimp Cocktail TowerA little dramatic. A little nostalgic. Always a crowd favorite. Serve chilled shrimp in coupe glasses stacked on a drink stand or tiered server for maximum wow factor. Giant Wedge Salad BoardCrisp lettuce. Blue cheese. Tomatoes. Bacon. All arranged on a platter so guests can build their perfect wedge. I will be arranging this Wedge Salad with Thousand Island Dressing later this week -- just hunks of iceberg and all the toppings scattered around my Golden Rabbit Platter. Grilled BreadBecause nobody has ever been disappointed by warm bread. Compound ButterA small detail that feels surprisingly special. Mix softened butter with herbs, citrus zest, roasted garlic, or your favorite seasoning blend. I love serving this Butter Board with Homemade Focaccia! Make-Ahead DessertThe secret weapon of every relaxed host. Make it the day before and thank yourself later. Or, better yet... Pick it up from the bakery section of your market. Woo hoo! Your Hosting TimelineFridayโ Make dessert โ Buy flowers That's it. Seriously. Saturday Morningโ Prep salad ingredients โ Make cocktail sauce Store everything in the refrigerator and move on with your day. One Hour Before Guests Arriveโ Assemble shrimp cocktail tower โ Arrange salad board โ Slice bread โ Set out compound butter โ Light candles And then? Pour yourself a drink. You're done. This is why I love "make one, assemble the rest" menus. The food feels abundant. The table feels beautiful. The evening feels effortless. And most importantly, you're actually present for it. Because people rarely remember every dish you served. They remember the stories they told. The conversations they had. The way they felt sitting around your table. A Few Favorite Hosting PiecesThese are the items I reach for again and again when I'm serving menus like this: โ A Drink Tree (that just happens to be perfect for stacking shrimp cocktail coupe glasses... I love my Nick and Nora glasses, but would prefer these wider mouthed ones to serve things other than drinks out of.) โ A Three-Tiered Stand (because tea sandwiches aren't the only thing that belong on a tiered server) โ A Large Serving Platterโ โ Simple White Serving Bowls - I don't know if people will call these 'simple,' but I love a two-fer serving dish... These are technically soup bowls, but are great for serving dips out of. Plus, if you chill them for a few hours ahead of time, your dip stays cold for a long while. These pieces make entertaining feel special while working hard all year long. One last reminder before I go: Beautiful hosting is rarely about doing more. It's about choosing what matters most. This week, I hope you choose the conversation. With the biggest heap of love, Ashley P.S. If you're planning a summer gathering soon, steal this menu. It's one of those rare combinations of beautiful, delicious, affordable, and almost impossible to mess up. |
๐ฉโ๐ณ Easy Recipes that Gather People ๐ฅฐ Making Life Simple and Tasty ๐ Ringing in the NEW Southern Belle
Hi, Sweet Friends! Today is a special day. (And no... it's not a certain other party...) Eighteen years ago, I hit publish on a little blog called Sweetpea Lifestyle. At the time, I had no idea what I was doing. I certainly didn't have a business plan. I didn't know anything about content strategy, affiliate links, social media algorithms, or email funnels. And honestly, that wasn't a thing 18 years ago! I just loved sharing recipes. And I loved gathering people around a table. Somehow,...
Hey, Sweet Friends! Can I tell you a little hosting secret? Most hosts spend hours worrying about the food. ๐ Will there be enough? ๐ Will people like it? ๐ Should I make one more appetizer? ๐ Is the salad too boring? I know because Iโve asked myself all of those questions. But after years of hosting dinner parties, Iโve learned something surprising: The meals people remember most arenโt always the ones with the fanciest menu. Theyโre the ones where someone felt seen. Theyโre the ones where...
Hey, Sweet Friends! Happy June! One of the themes weโre exploring this month is ๐ Curious Hearts. When we hear the word curiosity, we often think it has to be something big and adventurous. A new city. A new hobby. A dramatic life change. But Iโve found that curiosity usually shows up in much smaller ways. Itโs trying a new salad dressing. Grilling a different protein. Picking up an ingredient youโve never cooked with before. Texting a friend on a random Tuesday and saying, โWant to come over...
