🎂 Eighteen Years Later, I'd Still Start With Dinner

Hi, Sweet Friends!

Today is a special day. (And no... it's not a certain other party...)

Eighteen years ago, I hit publish on a little blog called Sweetpea Lifestyle.

At the time, I had no idea what I was doing.

I certainly didn't have a business plan.

I didn't know anything about content strategy, affiliate links, social media algorithms, or email funnels. And honestly, that wasn't a thing 18 years ago!

I just loved sharing recipes.

And I loved gathering people around a table.

Somehow, through thousands of blog posts, recipes, photos, videos, dinner parties, and cups of tea, that little blog became this beautiful community.

And today, Sweetpea Lifestyle turns 18.

Eighteen years.

It feels impossible and deeply right all at the same time.

Over the years, so much has changed.

The internet has changed.

Social media has changed.

I have changed.

I've had seasons where I felt confident and seasons where I questioned everything.

I've experienced success and disappointment.

I've learned new skills, let go of old dreams, and discovered new ones I never saw coming.

And through all of it, one thing has remained true:

I still believe dinner parties can change the world.

Not because the food is extraordinary.

Not because the table is beautiful.

Not because everything goes perfectly.

But because gathering people together still feels like one of the most hopeful things we can do.

Especially now.

This year has been particularly meaningful.

I stood on a TEDx stage and shared a message I've carried in my heart for years, Dinner Parties Can Change the World.

I launched Sweetpea's Supper Club.

I watched people embrace the idea that hospitality isn't performance—it's presence.

And perhaps most importantly, I've become more convinced than ever that the things that matter most are often the simplest.

🍽️ A shared meal.

🥰 A thoughtful question.

💬 A lingering conversation.

🌿 An invitation.

🪑 A seat at the table.

So today, in honor of 18 years, I thought I'd share:

18 Things I've Learned In 18 Years

  1. People crave belonging more than perfection.
  2. Nobody remembers whether the napkins matched.
  3. Most dinner parties are saved by good conversation, not better recipes.
  4. Hospitality is hope in action.
  5. The people who matter don't care if your house is spotless.
  6. A rotisserie chicken has solved more problems than I can count.
  7. Beautiful doesn't have to be expensive.
  8. Everyone wants to feel welcomed.
  9. The best recipes are usually the ones someone made for you first.
  10. Community doesn't happen by accident.
  11. Small tables matter.
  12. Most people are waiting for someone else to make the first move.
  13. Life becomes richer when we choose curiosity over assumption.
  14. If you're lonely, sometimes you have to be the invite.
  15. Done is almost always better than perfect.
  16. Your table doesn't have to seat twelve to make an impact. (I actually think less is better!)
  17. The internet changes constantly. Human connection doesn't.
  18. The life you want is often hiding behind an invitation.

That last one may be the lesson I've learned most deeply.

So many beautiful things in my life have happened because someone extended an invitation.

And just as many happened because I decided to extend one myself.

That's true of friendships.

It's true of opportunities.

It's true of this business.

And it's true of every dinner party I've ever hosted.

Before I sign off, I want to thank you.

Whether you've been reading since the early blog days or you found me last week, thank you for being here.

👏 Thank you for trying the recipes.

👏 Thank you for opening these emails.

👏 Thank you for sharing your stories.

👏 Thank you for believing that food is about more than food.

The truth is, Sweetpea Lifestyle has never really been about recipes.

It's been about people.

It has always been about people.

And after eighteen years, that's still what matters most.

Thank you for pulling up a chair.

I can't wait to see what the next chapter holds.

With so much gratitude,

Ashley

P.S. Hit reply and tell me how long you've been here. Was it a recipe? A dinner party idea? A social media post? A TEDx talk? I'd love to know how our paths crossed. And maybe this week, you'll make the first recipe I shared, Toni's Tuna Salad!

Hey, Sweet Friends! Can I tell you a little hosting secret? Most hosts spend hours worrying about the food. 👉 Will there be enough? 👉 Will people like it? 👉 Should I make one more appetizer? 👉 Is the salad too boring? I know because I’ve asked myself all of those questions. But after years of hosting dinner parties, I’ve learned something surprising: The meals people remember most aren’t always the ones with the fanciest menu. They’re the ones where someone felt seen. They’re the ones where...

Hey, Sweet Friends! Happy June! One of the themes we’re exploring this month is 💕 Curious Hearts. When we hear the word curiosity, we often think it has to be something big and adventurous. A new city. A new hobby. A dramatic life change. But I’ve found that curiosity usually shows up in much smaller ways. It’s trying a new salad dressing. Grilling a different protein. Picking up an ingredient you’ve never cooked with before. Texting a friend on a random Tuesday and saying, “Want to come over...

Hi, Sweet Friends! June has always felt a little magical to me. Maybe it's the longer evenings. Maybe it's the tomatoes finally showing up at the farmers' market. Maybe it's knowing summer is stretching out in front of us like an open road. Whatever it is, I've been thinking a lot about curiosity lately. Not the kind that sends you across the world or inspires a dramatic life makeover. The quieter kind. The kind that asks a better question. The kind that invites a friend to dinner. The kind...
