Make your house the place to be 🍎

I have a September assignment for all of us: Make your house the place to be.

Not the fanciest place to be.

Not the cleanest.

Not the place with the biggest kitchen or the prettiest dining room or the most impressive menu.

The place where people walk in and immediately think, Oh, good. I'm here.

THAT place.

Because I think sometimes we make gathering at home so much bigger than it needs to be.

We wait until we have the right table.

The right dishes.

A free Saturday to clean every baseboard.

A menu impressive enough to warrant an invitation.

Meanwhile, the best nights usually start with something much simpler:

“Come over. I'm making dinner.”

September feels like such a good month to practice that.

Summer schedules are settling down. We're finding our routines again. The evenings are starting to hint that fall might eventually arrive.

And around Chez Sweetpea?

We're making home the destination.

✨ Sweetpea’s Little Luxury

This week's Little Luxury: Something seasonal for the house that you can actually USE.

I'm not asking you to haul seventeen bins of fall decor out of storage.

Please don't. 😂

I'm talking about one little thing that tells your brain: Ohhhh. We're in a new season.

🍎 A pretty bowl filled with apples.

🕯️ A new candle.

🍽️ A thrifted serving dish you'll use from now through Thanksgiving.

🌻 Fresh flowers in colors that feel a little moodier.

A tablecloth you haven't used since last fall.

Even switching out the cocktail napkins counts.

The goal isn't to decorate your entire house for September.

It's to notice September while you're living in it.

🍎 Around Chez Sweetpea

And speaking of apples…

This month's Sweetpea's Supper Club Dinner Kit is inspired by one of my very favorite places: Apple Country in Western North Carolina.

September here means winding mountain roads, farm stands, apple orchards, baskets piled high with fruit, and that first little whisper that fall is coming.

And I wanted to put that feeling on the table.

The whole point of these Dinner Kits is to take away that dreaded:

“Okay... but what am I supposed to DO?”

I give you the menu.

The recipes.

The market list.

The timeline.

The little details.

The table ideas.

The playlist direction.

The things to think about ahead of time.

So instead of spending three days planning a dinner party, you get to do the important part:

Invite the people.

Because that's what I really want Sweetpea's Supper Club to teach us.

Hosting doesn't have to be an event we produce.

It can simply be part of how we live.

🛒 Future Me Approves

This week, Future You would like you to do one very specific thing:

Choose a night to have people over this month.

You do NOT have to know what you're serving yet.

You don't need a theme.

You don't need invitations.

Just look at the calendar and choose the night.

Then text the people.

Because do you know what happens when we say: "We should have y'all over sometime!"

Nothing. 😂

Absolutely nothing happens.

But: “Are y'all free Saturday the 19th? Come over for supper.”

Now we have a dinner party.

Put the date on the calendar.

We'll figure out the rest later.

Future You will be thrilled that Current You finally made the decision.

🥂 Your Weekend Assignment

This weekend, I want you to practice making your house the place to be.

And I'm giving you two options.

Option One: Invite somebody in.

Drinks and a snack.

Chili and cornbread.

Takeout eaten off real plates.

Football and store-bought wings.

Sunday supper.

It counts.

OR...

Option Two: Host yourself first.

Make something you've been craving.

Put it on a real plate.

Pour your drink into the glass you love.

Sit at the table instead of eating over the kitchen sink.

Put your phone somewhere else.

Play some music.

And enjoy your own home.

Because the goal isn't actually to become someone who throws impressive dinner parties.

The goal is to build a life where gathering around the table feels normal.

Where your friends know they can come over.

Where there's usually something good to eat.

Where we don't need a reason to use the nice things.

Where home is somewhere we genuinely want to be.

That's the kind of house I want.

And that's exactly what we're practicing this September.

Make your house the place to be, Sweetpea.

From my table to yours,

I have a question for you this Monday: What can you do today that Thursday You will be ridiculously grateful for? Not December You. Not someday-when-you-finally-get-your-life-together You. Thursday You. She's close enough that we actually know what she might need. Maybe she'll be tired. Maybe the week will have gone sideways. Maybe she'll open the refrigerator at 5:30 PM and desperately hope someone in there has a plan. And this is where one of my favorite parts of my Holistic Hosting System...

September is here, and I am so ready for her. (But, y'all... this 90˚ weather can leave!) Not in a rush-the-season kind of way. More in a fresh notebook, tidy kitchen, dinner simmering, let's get our rhythms back kind of way. This month at Chez Sweetpea, we're leaning into enjoying our homes, gathering people around the table, getting back into routines that support us, and quietly preparing ourselves for the busier months ahead. Think: 🍎 Apple Country🏡 enjoying home🥘 cozy-but-not-too-cozy...

Tomorrow is September 1st. And I don't know about you, but I am ready. Not ready for pumpkins everywhere. Not ready to put on a sweater when it's still 80 degrees outside. And certainly not ready to skip straight past this beautiful little stretch of late summer. But I am ready for September. There's something about this month that has always felt like a second January to me. Maybe it's all that back-to-school energy we've been talking about. Maybe it's the fresh notebooks. Maybe it's...
